Outlook 2013 Rules issue when more than 50 rules exist ("The rules on this computer do not match the rules on Microsoft Exchange").

I think I may have found a bug.

My Outlook 2013 profile has more than 75 rules. When I started testing Outlook 2013, I got the message "The rules on this computer do not match the rules on Microsoft Exchange. Only one set of rules can be kept. You will usually want to keep the rules on the server. Which rules do you want to keep?"

I did the following troubleshooting:

1. I created a new Outlook profile. This didn't fix the issue.

2. I exported my rules, cleared them using "outlook /cleanrules", then reimported the rules. This didn't fix the issue.

3. I cleared the rules again (outlook /cleanrules), then hand-entered the rules. This also didn't fix the issue.

4. I reduced the number of rules to less than 50. This FIXED the problem.

5. When I entered rule #51, the problem came back. When I removed ruled #51, the problem was again fixed.

Does anyone know of a fix or workaround to this issue?

Thanks.

Sounds like you went over your "rule quota limit" as you do have a great number of rules.  Please see the link below for cause and possible resolution.

Increasing the "rule quota limit" to 256K does not fix the problem.

Moving from Outlook 2013 to Outlook 2010 fixes the problem.

That is why I think it is a bug, as ONLY Outlook 2013 is affected. Outlook 2010 works fine.

Hello,

I fully agree with YC58 !

I was using Outlook 2010 and just switched to 2013.

I was hit by this message after upgrade ans i continue to be hit by this message every time i run Outlook.
I am using cached-mode and my back end is an Exchange 2010.

Thanks so much for posting this!  I'm a heavy rules user and had exactly this issue when I upgraded my laptop to Outlook 2013 (no change at server end).  It's been plaguing me for months until I found your post and discovered I had 78 rules.  On bringing the number below 50 I no longer have the issue.

I just encountered this issue with Outlook 2013 and I had 53 Inbox rules (Exchange 2010) - I kept getting that "rules do not match error" and my existing rules weren't running.

Trimming the inbox rules down to 49 fixed the issue.  I definitely see a reproducable bug here.

Yeah, I am getting the same bug. Is there a KB article on this? Is there a fix?

This is really annoying has anyone contacted Microsoft about this issue, as it is clearly a bug with 2013, as soon as I delete one rule to bring it back to 50 rules I no longer receive the rules alert pop up.

Take a look at this:

I'm getting the same problem, and trying to convince my IT department to apply that fix to the Exchange server.

I encountered this problem this week.

To many rules. There was a warning on screen.

Is there a fix?

It appears to be a server side error.  See kb 2840454 and kb 2891587.  This update to Exchange Server 2010 is supposed to fix the problem.  Your next challenge is getting your IT dept to install this upgrade.  Good luck.

I'd include the full link but the web site police won't let me.

I am running Outlook 2013 on a MS Exchange Server 2013.

Rule limit still apply.

Is there ever going to be a fix?
